The blog of the Canadian Museum of History explores the history and artistry of Canadian, or more precisely, Quebec pewter-making. Jean-Francois Lozier delves into the career of Thomas Jean-Baptiste Menut, a nineteenth-century Montreal craftsman whose pewter spoons are valued by collectors of Canadiana, not just because of the fineness of their work but because he stamped his initials and "Montreal" on them, making them a lot more identifiable.
Except his stamp was sometimes "TM" and sometimes IM. Part of the point of the blog post is to establish that TM and IM were one and the same person, not a father and son. Clearly, there is much basic research that can still be done in the history of Canadian crafts.
