"Long Read" in The Guardian profiles historian Timothy Snyder and how he shapes the world's views of Putin, Ukraine, Trump, and the struggle for democracy -- though he says, “I’m just a history professor. I don’t have staff.”

Unusually for a serious historian, Snyder often draws analogies between the past and the present. More unusually still, he routinely makes predictions about the future. What he calls his “Cassandra mode” is different from his historical work, but not entirely disconnected.
