History of reading in a pandemic

The literary agency Cooke McDermid of Toronto reports evidence that books are keeping people going in isolation. And people are keeping the book trade going.
With many people sheltering in place, book sales are experiencing a surge. As you might expect, e-book and audio book sales are up by quite a lot (we’ve seen reports of a 20 percent increase in each category!), and physical book sales remain steady. Many indie bookstores are offering delivery of books, despite their physical locations being shuttered.
I must admit we've been hitting the Toronto Public Library ebook and audiobook online loan programs more than purchasing from bookstores.  Hmmm.
