The Tour: winning (and not) breakaways

better days...image from Woods's website.

The trouble with Tadej Pogachar being so damn strong... is that even the biggest mountain stages lack drama.  You know he's just going to zoom ahead to achieve whatever he need to achieve that day.  So I've been watching more casually in these recent stages.

On the other hand I have been eating up Michael Woods's blog posts, almost nightly reflection from the midst of the Tour de France, on what it like to be in the midst of it.  The latest, about the art and science of winning from the breakaway, explains more about grand tour cycling than I have ever seen.

Spoiler alert:  Woods has not been winning from the breakaway this year, not yet anyway, and there are not many stages left.  I put some of that down to him being the second-oldest rider in the Tour (38), but his explanation shows there is a lot more than that going on in any race day.
