Back in July, I was recommending Robert McGhee's Canadian Geographic review of The Island of the Seven Cities, the book that proposed a 15th century Chinese settlement on Cape Breton Island. McGhee, an archaeologist, was, shall we say, appropriately dubious.
Now Walrus magazine drops the other shoe. They have interviewed workers for the company that was out there in 1989 -- constructing all the "Chinese" ruins during its surveying activities. There's even a photo of the "ruins" during construction, pickup truck and all.
I wonder if the Globe & Mail or Toronto Star, both of whose reviewers gave loads of serious, respectful attention to the claim, will follow up.
