I recently noted the British online database tallying the British slaveowners who received compensation for lost "property" when slavery was abolished in the 1830s.

Business historian Andrew Smith takes a closer look -- and notes the Canadians on the rolls, including John A. Macdonald, evidently on behalf of his Jamaican-born wife (and hence post-1867, not at the time of emancipation), Governor James Douglas of British Columbia, Toronto architect Henry Bowyer Lane, and others.
