That thing about the Canadian navy being the third largest in the world at the end of the Second World War? This 2009 study by Rob Stuart argues it was not exactly so. The study is not exactly new, but it's new to me. However:
It was quite possibly the only navy to end the war with more vessels than it had had officers when the war began.H/t: LGM. (Tomorrow marks the seventieth anniversary of the surrender of Japan, ending major hostilities in World War Two. Or today, depending on how the time differences are counted.)
