David A. Wilson at the DCB

Went down last night to the University of Toronto to a little function to celebrate the appointment of David Wilson as the sixth (since 1959) General Editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Oddly, news of the appointment is not yet up on the DCB's own website.

David Wilson cemented his credentials for the job with his biography of D'Arcy McGee, much as his predecessor John English did with biographies of Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau. English and his predecessor Ramsay Cook, however, were also political insiders with good connections at the highest levels of official Ottawa.  And they needed to be, given the near-constant financial crisis the DCB endured during the 1980s and 1990s.

Word last night was that the financial crisis has eased. David Wilson should have the chance to apply other skills.
