Backhouse: Americans elect woman president

Got a notice about the annual meeting of the American Society for Legal History ( Its annual conference will be held outside the United States for the first time ever in November 2008, and it's to be in Ottawa. Not by coincidence, I expect, the society also has its first non-American president this year and she is Constance Backhouse, professor of law at the University of Ottawa. And a tremendously gifted and prolific historian, I might add, having read quite a bit of her work over the years: Petticoats and Prejudice, The Heiress and the Establishment, Colour-Coded, and much more.
